Watermelon tourmaline and diamond necklace in 18ct rose gold

£3,150.00

Watermelon tourmaline is an unusual and incredibly eye-catching gemstone , often cut in slices (as here) to show off the fascinating effect of its parti-coloured nature.  In this case it has been partially rose cut across the front with a large polished table and some rose cut facets around the edges to give a little extra twinkle.  It is surrounded by a halo of sparkling diamonds and set into 18ct rose gold that perfectly complements the combination of pink and green in the gem.

Watermelon tourmaline is one of those quirks of nature that make natural gemstones so fascinating.  Tourmaline grows as long prisms with a slightly rounded triangular outline (this piece has been fashioned into more of a pear shape for aesthetic reasons but reflects the general idea).  It is a complex mineral with a very complicated chemical formula and can form with a variety of trace elements present to give a whole rainbow of different colours.  Sometimes the exact composition of the crystal can alter during its growth and in tourmaline this can result in crystals that are different colour in different areas.  Sometimes this means that you can cut a long gem that is perhaps green at one end and pink at the other.  At other times (as here) the change gives a crystal that is pink at its core and green around the edges so when you cut a slice through the prism you get a vaguely triangular slice with that pattern.  This happens naturally as the crystal grows, so finding a crystal with a perfect split that looks as fantastic as this is unusual.

Tourmaline is a gemstone that is prone to inclusions and this becomes even more apparent when the stone is presented in a thin slice.  Because an attractive parti-coloured appearance is so sought after a few inclusions visible to the eye are generally forgiven.

Watermelon tourmaline: 5.70ct.
