Fossil opal is found in long extinct sea beds in the south of Australia.

Formed when silica settles over the shell of sea creature. Over millions of years the silica fossilises into opal keeping the shape of the sea creature long after any traces of the original shell have disappeared. Cut and polished to keep as much of this form as possible each piece of fossil opal is unique in both its shape and the colours it displays.

The undulating shapes of fossil opal create a real challenge to the goldsmith. This pendant has been made by an opal specialist and is handmade to carefully follow the lines of the opal.
